We are looking for a new chief conductor
beginning the autumn semester of 2019
Who we are
Founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius, the Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki, known in Swedish as Akademiska Sångföreningen or Akademen for short, is a modern, active and ambitious academic male-voice choir based in Helsinki. The choir comprises around sixty active singers, aged twenty to forty, today representing all universities of the capital region.
We may be a choir of ancestry and traditions, but above all we have always been a pioneer on the Finnish and Nordic music scene, and this is what we want to continue to be. On our repertoire one can find everything from renaissance, baroque and national romantic music to barbershop, modernism and pop music, and we are continuously expanding the repertoire with new commissioned works, which we also always strive to record. We give around ten concerts and performances yearly, among these both innovative concert concepts such as the hit Fåglarna (‘The Birds’) in 2017 and traditional performances at festivities such as 1st May, Independence Day and Runeberg Day. Almost every year we go on some form of tour or trip, either domestically or abroad. We collaborate closely with the Academic Female Voice Choir Lyran, and our largest audiences each year are gathered by our joint Christmas concerts, attended by several thousands of concertgoers. In addition, we are proud of our vital quartet activities, which give the individual singers opportunities to perform and improve in smaller ensembles.
We are, however, not only in good condition artistically, but also a well-managed registered association with sound finances and a skilful administration. The executive committee or board, under the leadership of the president, carries out the decisions of the general meeting and handles daily operations, while the chief conductor is a member of the artistic council, responsible for artistic and long-term planning.
Since 2008, the chief conductor and artistic director of the choir has been Dr Kari Turunen, who has recently been appointed artistic director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir, beginning the autumn semester of 2019.
What we expect from you
We expect you to be a qualified, dedicated and inspiring artistic director with choral conducting experience, who is willing to work on a long-term basis with ambitious artistic goals together with a committed choir, tongue-in-cheek but with a steady hand. Relevant musical arts education is considered an advantage.
As the chief conductor of the choir, you are its foremost artistic director, with ultimate responsibility for the choir’s musical ability; its sound and voice production; its repertoire; its concerts and performances; and its artistic development and progress. The duties include planning and leading the choir’s warm-ups and rehearsals; to conduct the choir at ordinary concerts and performances; to broaden the choir’s repertoire; to develop the choir artistically and musically; to establish contacts with musically relevant persons and institutions outside the choir; and in close collaboration with the artistic council to develop concert concepts and concert programmes, present ideas, promote innovation, set long-term goals and otherwise plan the artistic activities.
We currently rehearse every Monday evening (5.45 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.) roughly from September to May in central Helsinki, with rehearsal retreats once per semester elsewhere in Finland, occasional extra and dress rehearsals before concerts, and tours or trips domestically or abroad roughly each or every second year.
The position is currently roughly equivalent to a third of a full-time position on average.
What we can offer you
We can offer you a well-managed and dynamic choir consisting of young, motivated, academic men, who are passionate about choral singing and who, under your guidance, want to improve as singers and offer the audience rewarding musical experiences. As the new chief conductor of the choir, you will receive great support from the choir and its administration in your new role.
The solid foundations of the choir mean great opportunities for realizing ideas both big and small. The choir also has a deep and rewarding social dimension, with a good spirit of camaraderie, an inspiring discussion climate and valued traditions.
The application period has ended. We thank all applicants!
